SHIPS ACCEPTED FOR REGISTRATION IN TERMS OF AGE
MTA has a tough policy regarding the registration of ships where age of vessel is concerned. In this respect we highly recommend a study of Merchant Shipping Directorate (MSD) Notice No. 36 of 16 February 2000. However, hereunder please find the conditions under which certain age vessels may be accepted for registration.
Trading Ships of 25 years and over!
AS A RULE: No such ships would be accepted, unless in very special circumstances
Trading Ships Aged 20 to 25 years!
AS A RULE: Ships in this category would be given the opportunity to undergo a "pre-registration" inspection provided we produce:
1. Proof that the ship is in class, or is in the process of being classed
with a recognised classification society;
2. A copy of a full Survey Status Report issued by the current
Classification Society;
3. A copy of the current International Tonnage Certificate;
4. A copy of the current DOC Certificate held, in terms of the ISM
Code, by the intended Technical Managers for the ship type;
5. A draft application for registration form;
6. Funds are LM 1000 for the inspection and LM 200 for our
assistance;
7. Details of the ship's agents at the proposed port of survey.
NB: The Registrar-General retains the right to refuse the registration of any ship.
Trading Ships Aged 15 to 19 years
Ships would also have to be inspected either prior to provisional registration at owner's expense or within one month of provisional registration at the expense of the Administration. The option allows the owner to have the ship inspected prior to registration. If the standard of the ship is found to be unacceptable after registration, she would not be allowed to trade and the refund of registration fees would not be considered.
Owners of ships of less than 5,000 Net Tonnage inspected within one month of provisional registration would have to contribute LM 500 towards expenses.
NB: In any case, the final decision as to whether or not the registration of any ship is to be considered rests with the Administration.
It is to be noted that the costs indicated above are subject to additional expenses, depending on the specific requirements of the particular inspection (travel expenses, accommodation if required, supplementary inspections, if applicable, conveyance to and from the ship etc).
